“Heart to Heart’s continued progress gives me great optimism about the ability of people from different nations and cultures to work together collaboratively for a common greater good – the saving of children’s lives. Our teaching model and commitment to self-sustainability inspire everyone involved to believe that a brighter global future is within our reach.”
Steve Holland became involved with Heart to Heart in 1995, while serving as President of the Rotary Club of Berkeley. The Club’s International Service Project was to raise money to buy a heart-lung machine for one of Heart to Heart’s programs in Russia. Steve quickly rose to the challenge. To build broad support for the project, the fundraising campaign limited individual gifts to $1,000 – and achieved over 90% participation. In June 1995, Steve traveled to St. Petersburg for the ceremonial delivery of the heart-lung machine. He was inspired by seeing Heart to Heart’s work firsthand.
Steve was pleased to join the Heart to Heart Board in 1998. He has served as Chairman since 2002. His people skills, business acumen, and can-do approach have been key to Heart to Heart’s evolution as an organization. His leadership has fostered a board where communication and discussion are highly valued, leading to decision-making by consensus. Steve’s style has nurtured a remarkable level of board commitment and involvement.
During Steve’s tenure, Heart to Heart has significantly expanded its children’s programs throughout the heartland of Russia and positioned itself on firm financial ground.
Steve has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Alta Bates Summit Foundation since 2003, and is currently serving as their Incoming Chair. He is also the Treasurer of the West Edge Opera formerly known as the Berkeley Opera and has volunteered for the Bay Area Outdoor Recreation Program.
Steve served as the President of Fidelity Insurance Service, and was recognized as one of the top 25 property and casualty insurance agencies in the East Bay.
